Investigation Launched at Texas A&M Following Fraternity Hazing Incident
A criminal investigation is currently taking place at Texas A&M University after several fraternity pledges were hospitalized. Reports indicate that some are struggling to walk, while others have suffered concerning symptoms, such as “almost black” urine.
The distressing events unfolded on September 14 at the Kappa Sigma Lodge, located on campus. The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office is now looking into the matter. The department made a statement on the situation recently.
According to the sheriff’s office, the new Kappa Sigma pledge was taken to a remote off-campus location and was instructed to participate in relentless physical activity until exhaustion set in.
This pledge reportedly endured what has been described as torture training, in unsanitary conditions. Some participants lost consciousness during the ordeal, as reported by local news outlets.
A victim, who chose to remain anonymous, described a particularly harrowing experience where he was forced to squat in unison with others while being shouted at. “We did three, four, or five hundred of those,” he recounted.
“In the mud, in total darkness, they were yelling at us, shining lights on our faces—it made me dizzy, and I actually felt like I might throw up,” the student added.
This same individual mentioned that following the intense drill, he could barely move his legs, and his urine appeared almost black.
Another pledge sought medical assistance the next day and reported that a fraternity leader advised him to visit various hospitals and to lie to doctors about the incident.
Although not yet confirmed, some pledges are reportedly facing diagnoses for rhabdomyolysis—a serious condition that involves muscle damage. Symptoms can include dark urine, muscle pain, and fatigue, according to health authorities.
The Kappa Sigma Fraternity has acknowledged the situation involving its Texas A&M chapter. Any members found to have broken the Fraternity Code of Conduct would face consequences for violating its strict policies.
The university has stated that it does not accept hazing and is taking these allegations seriously. They also mentioned that the claims are under investigation for potential violations of the Student Code of Conduct. The University is fully cooperating with law enforcement as related investigations progress.
In light of this ongoing inquiry, police are calling for anyone involved to come forward with information.
This isn’t the first instance involving Kappa Sigma in a hazing controversy; back in 2018, two brothers from Texas Christian University faced arrest after a pledge was hospitalized due to excessive drinking.
