Karen Reed Retrial Update

After her attorneys presented a video in court, Karen Reed discussed it with reporters while heading to her waiting SUV. The footage reportedly showed interactions between the late John O’Keefe and ATF agent Brian Higgins at a bar in Canton, Massachusetts. Reed stated the video “speaks for itself.” She’s currently on trial for the second time regarding the murder of her boyfriend, O’Keefe, in January 2022.

When asked if it seemed like there was tension between John and Higgins, Reed replied, “It looks like that.” Yet, she seemed somewhat removed from the specifics of the situation. “I wasn’t paying attention,” she explained, referring to the time spent at the bar where she was primarily focused on a friend, Karina Kolokitas, during their time there.

Kolokitas, another witness for the defense, mentioned a peculiar interaction involving Jennifer McCabe—whose brother-in-law owns the house where O’Keefe later died—but did not note any confrontation between Higgins and O’Keefe.

David Gelman, a defense attorney, cautioned that public commentary could be detrimental to Reed’s case, suggesting that prosecutors might leverage her statements. Meanwhile, there were other reactions in court as Reed interacted with Kolokitas before reporters. Grace Edwards, a trial lawyer, noted that Reed had engaging discussions, possibly indicating her focus was elsewhere during the events leading up to O’Keefe’s death.

Through surveillance footage, it was observed that Reed, O’Keefe, Higgins, and others were present at a nearby residence after a party. The legal proceedings have been heavily scrutinized, particularly with witnesses claiming Reed’s vehicle wasn’t the cause of O’Keefe’s injuries, hinting at a potential confrontation with Higgins, who has not been charged but was allegedly involved with Reed on the side.

Prosecutors assert they found evidence from O’Keefe’s clothing that could link to Reed’s vehicle, contrasting the testimony of other witnesses who reported hearing Reed express distress shortly after O’Keefe’s body was discovered.
