Karine Jean-Pierre Criticizes Democratic Leadership Over Mamdani’s Mayoral Victory

Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed that Democratic leaders made a significant error by not backing incoming New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani during the primaries. She congratulated him on his election win, emphasizing on Wednesday how crucial it was for young people to engage in off-year elections, even when up against well-known opponents.

Jean-Pierre noted that Mamdani’s success stemmed from his connection with voters, rather than any support from party leadership. She criticized the Democratic establishment for sending the “wrong message” by hesitating to support him throughout his campaign.

Reflecting on this, she said, “He’s the Democratic candidate for mayor and he’s basically saying, ‘No, the voters are wrong. We don’t want him.'” This approach, she believes, could disengage young voters, which is especially concerning during critical moments in the political landscape.

She acknowledged the need for the Democratic Party to learn from Mamdani’s campaign style, which she deemed effective, suggesting that they should not shy away from fierce opposition. Additionally, she urged the party to recognize and cater to all demographics, regardless of polling data.

Although Jean-Pierre didn’t specifically name any leaders, it was clear that several prominent Democratic figures were slow to support Mamdani even after he was chosen as their candidate. For instance, New York Governor Kathy Hochul only formally endorsed him nearly three months post his primary victory.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also delayed his endorsement until just weeks before the election, voicing uncertainty about Mamdani’s role as the “future” of the party. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did not support him at all.

Despite this, Mamdani garnered backing from some progressive voices, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, as well as former President Barack Obama. Jean-Pierre hopes that Mamdani’s win sends a clear message about the need for inclusivity within the party.
