Karine Jean-Pierre Expresses Skepticism Over Kamala Harris’ Election Chances

In her new book, Karine Jean-Pierre, a former White House press secretary, expresses doubts about Kamala Harris’ chances in the upcoming election. She reflects on waking up to the news of Harris’ defeat, which led to frantic calls from friends in disbelief. Despite their shock, Jean-Pierre admits she wasn’t surprised. “Honestly, I never thought Harris would win. I’ve experienced life as a Black woman, feeling the weight of the harsh stares and judgments,” she shares in her book.

Jean-Pierre also discusses her decision to leave the Democratic Party, claiming it notably betrayed former President Joe Biden. Her experiences while serving made her wary about Harris, citing the misogyny and double standards she faced and believes Harris continues to encounter.

She notes, “Many fought hard and had hopes for Harris. I wanted to believe too. But in the end, America just wasn’t ready.” In her view, the election result wasn’t just about votes—it reflected deeper societal issues. Throughout her book, Jean-Pierre critiques the Democratic Party, expressing disappointment in how it failed to support Harris effectively.

She emphasizes that after displacing Biden, it was alarming to see party leaders unable to guide an experienced lawyer like Harris against a less qualified opponent. “The party needs to redefine its mission without publicly tearing down its own members,” she argues.

Jean-Pierre also touches on the issues of sexism and racism that Biden has cited as significant factors in Harris’ loss. For him, it’s not that he doubted her capabilities. “She is absolutely qualified,” insists Biden, but he acknowledges the relentless campaign against her as a Black woman leader. He mentions feeling a mix of surprise and frustration at how these prejudices were so apparent.

In her book, Jean-Pierre advocates that Harris should be able to pursue the nomination without interference from others in the party. She warns that neglecting Harris would be a disservice to Black women, the steadfast supporters of the Democratic Party, who have often been overlooked.

As Harris promotes her memoir detailing her 2024 campaign attempts, she remains firm, claiming that Trump lacks a mandate and describing the election as arguably the closest in recent history.
