Karl Labek Reflects on ESPN Departure
For Karl Labek, the experience of following news about his termination from ESPN last month felt really “surreal.”
In his first public comments after the decision, Labek discussed his perspectives on ESPN during an appearance on “Westwood One Sports Night.” He emphasized that there was “literally no malice” involved, noting his long tenure of 33 years with the network, where he became a prominent voice in baseball as both a play-by-play broadcaster and studio host.
Labek, who is 61, remarked, “I don’t really comment on that. I think it’s kind of clear what happened there. I literally harbor no ill feelings toward the company that has provided me with a life full of rewarding experiences since my days at Needham High School and Ithaca College.”
Even after his layoff, Labek has continued to work intermittently on MLB broadcasts and is slated to call the Little League World Series this month.
His departure was part of a larger shift at ESPN, which also saw layoffs affecting other notable figures such as NFL insider Tom Pelissero, analyst Cam Newton, anchor David Lloyd, and former Jet Bart Scott.
Additionally, the network announced Ryan Clark’s exit mid-show during “NFL Live,” which created an unusual scenario where he was removed from the panel right after a commercial break.
Labek had previously been the voice of Sunday Night Baseball for four seasons, contributing significantly to baseball coverage and also calling college basketball games, as detailed in his ESPN bio.
On Friday, Labek expressed his excitement about the upcoming Little League World Series. He said it’s “the tournament that most people associate with me,” and noted how it holds a special place in his heart for all the reasons that fans cherish baseball.
“The most surreal thing was the appreciation and, honestly, some frustration I encountered from people along the way,” he shared on “Westwood One Sports Night.” “When you’re in the midst of it all, you rarely consider the impact you have on others. To be honest, that realization was immensely overwhelming, satisfying, and heartwarming.”
