Carmelo Anthony Sentenced to 35 Years for Murder
Carmelo Anthony received a 35-year prison sentence after being found guilty of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalfe. The verdict was announced just hours before the sentencing, with the jury dismissing a defense argument based on “sudden passion.”
Mary Ann Martinez, the Texas Bureau Chief, shared the news on X, highlighting the jury’s earlier decision that led to Anthony’s conviction. The court heard gasps as the verdict was read, and witnesses noted that Anthony was crying while his lawyers offered support.
Following the sentencing, the courtroom was filled with emotional reactions. After a brief recess, the family of Austin Metcalf delivered a victim impact statement. Anthony was again observed crying, with soft sniffles heard from the defense table. Lawyers were seen comforting him throughout the proceedings. Interestingly, amidst the tension, two women in the audience expressed their support for Anthony before being escorted out, as the judge had warned against emotional displays.
Reports indicated that Anthony would be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence.
This tragic incident occurred during a track meet in Frisco, Texas, in 2025. During the altercation, Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense due to a dispute over seating. Witness accounts, however, painted a different narrative. According to a police report, Metcalfe reportedly told Anthony to leave the team tent, which escalated tensions. Witnesses indicated that Anthony then pulled a knife and stabbed Metcalfe in the chest before fleeing, leaving Metcalfe to die in the arms of his brother, Hunter.
In the immediate aftermath of the stabbing, Anthony confessed to the police, admitting, “I’m not being charged with this, I did it.” During the trial, multiple witnesses testified that Anthony had instigated the confrontation, suggesting he had been asked to leave the tent several times prior to the fatal encounter.
