First-Degree Murder Charge in Texas Stabbing Incident
On Tuesday, it was reported that Carmelo Anthony, an 18-year-old, has been charged with first-degree murder following the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf during a track event in Texas.
Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced that his office had spent weeks compiling evidence to present to the grand jury.
“This case has struck a chord, both in Collin County and far beyond. I understand how deeply it resonates. Incidents at school events are particularly unsettling,” Willis stated. “Our judicial system thrives on stability and principles, and we are committed to that. This case demands it.”
Willis emphasized his support for Metcalf’s family and encouraged the community to keep them in their thoughts.
Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, expressed his relief, saying, “I’m glad the legal process is moving ahead, and I’m looking forward to the trial.”
In light of the indictment, Anthony’s lawyer Mike Howard released a video statement.
“Carmelo and his family trust in the fairness of the justice system here in Collin County. Carmelo is eager for his day in court,” Howard remarked. “The trial will reveal the complete story and ensure justice is served. We believe that once all the facts are presented, doubts may arise that Carmelo acted in self-defense.”
The incident reportedly unfolded when Metcalf, a junior at Memorial High School, asked Anthony to vacate a space under the school’s pop-up tent. According to officials, after a brief exchange, Anthony produced a knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest.
Metcalf’s twin brother, Hunter, attempted to aid him but was unable to save him.
“I held his chest, trying to stop the bleeding. I looked into his eyes and saw him fade away,” Hunter recounted in a heartfelt interview the next day.
Anthony allegedly tried to flee but was soon apprehended. He reportedly told police during questioning, “I was protecting myself. He grabbed me.”
Last week, the Frisco Independent School District released surveillance footage from the incident. The recordings from the stationary camera in David Kuykendall Stadium showed no physical altercations between the boys prior to the stabbing.
