Government Shutdown Tied to Healthcare Debate

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt expressed strong criticism towards Democrats on Wednesday, blaming them for a government shutdown which she claims is linked to a health crisis they initiated.

On October 1, the government experienced a shutdown as Democrats opposed a Continuing Resolution supported by Republicans. This CR notably lacked extensions for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies set to expire at the end of December. Levitt noted that Democrats effectively facilitated the longest government shutdown in U.S. history in an effort to rectify “the system they broke” through the ACA legislation enacted in 2009.

She stated, “As you mentioned, Democrats initially supported our policies. They are holding the country hostage while trying to negotiate the very healthcare system they created. It’s, let’s face it, a damaged system.” Levitt pointed to the escalating costs of care across the nation, emphasizing that it seems contradictory for the government to shut down in a bid to resolve these issues. “The system they broke doesn’t make sense,” she added, highlighting the president’s concerns about this predicament.

Since the implementation of Obamacare, healthcare expenses have surged significantly. For instance, total national medical expenditures rose from $2.6 trillion in 2010 to $4.9 trillion in 2023, marking an 88% increase. When examined on a per-person basis, medical costs rose from $11,150 to $14,500 in the same period.

Recently, former President Trump suggested the idea of directly depositing money into Americans’ health savings accounts to alleviate some financial burdens related to healthcare. He criticized Democrats for their claims of aiding the working class, asserting that the ACA primarily benefits big insurance companies. “If the Democrats get their way again, it’s just another payout at the expense of everyday Americans,” he argued, proposing that Republicans should bolster personal health savings accounts instead.

A report from the Paragon Health Institute contended that Democrat-backed subsidies discourage employment and can even lead to employers dropping coverage altogether. Initially, these subsidies were confined to families earning between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, but adjustments made by Biden removed these income restrictions and increased government aid.

In a recent development, eight Senate Democrats sided with Republican senators to vote for reopening the government without including ACA subsidies in the revised Continuing Resolution. There’s an expectation for the House to vote on the funding bill soon, after which it will be sent to President Trump’s desk. Additionally, Senate Republicans have agreed to vote on extending ACA subsidies in December in return for cooperation from Democrats.
