White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt shared with the Daily Caller that President Donald Trump is willing to collaborate with the Republican governor to tackle crime in cities run by Democrats.
Trump initiated a crime crackdown in Washington, D.C. on August 7th, ramping up law enforcement presence through an executive order that established the “D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.” Shortly after, he transferred D.C. police to federal control and deployed the National Guard. Now, his sights are set on other major cities like Chicago and New York. Leavitt mentioned during a press conference that the president might also consider supporting initiatives in additional locations.
“Democrats often argue that red states have higher crime rates, yet they conveniently ignore the high crime statistics in blue cities,” Leavitt stated. “I believe the president is open to working with Governor Red State to address crime in blue cities, such as Memphis, Tennessee.”
Leavitt responded to Democratic claims suggesting that crime rates are higher in Republican-led states compared to those governed by Democrats. “If you examine the list of the top 20 cities with the highest crime rates in the U.S., every one except for one in Louisiana is led by Democrats. These Democrats have supported policies mentioned earlier in this briefing, like cashless bail for virtually every misdemeanor,” she explained.
“Even though Jackson isn’t officially a sanctuary city, Mississippi has a law that bans them, yet it has acted as a de facto sanctuary city for criminals and undocumented immigrants since 2017,” she added.
Leavitt then reiterated that the president is willing to work with Republican leaders to reduce crime in cities controlled by Democrats.
“Yes, absolutely. The President is eager to collaborate with anyone in this country who wants to end these detrimental policies and restore law and order in our cities. This is evidenced by the remarkable collaboration between the mayor of Washington, D.C., and the capital of our country.”
