Karoline Leavitt Criticizes CBS for Proposing That Trump Should Only Remove Violent Immigrants

Trump Administration’s Deportation Policies Remain Firm

President Trump will persist with the deportation of immigrants who haven’t committed violent crimes, according to White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt. Reporters expressed disappointment on Tuesday about this approach.

Leavitt emphasized that the administration continues to focus on deporting all illegal immigrants, particularly those considered the most dangerous. She addressed the media’s concerns sternly.

This disappointment was amplified after a CBS report indicated that Trump’s deportation strategy wasn’t limited to serious offenders like murderers and rapists, as he had previously claimed.

The CBS interview highlighted that, while Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) does track significant offenders, only a small percentage of those arrested face charges related to violent crimes. This raises concerns that the mass deportation efforts disproportionately affect individuals who aren’t threats to public safety.

The report was penned by Camilo Montoya Galvez, who has been noted for his favorable stance toward immigrants and frequently reported on related issues. His reporting gained praise from Alejandro Mayorkas, a pro-immigrant official in Biden’s administration.

Leavitt reacted to Montoya Galvez’s report by asserting that many voices, particularly from the liberal side, have misrepresented the Trump administration’s policies. She highlighted that illegal immigrants are subject to deportation, although the top priority is addressing serious criminals.

Interestingly, she noted that nearly 60% of those arrested by ICE faced criminal charges or convictions, with many associated with nonviolent offenses. She elaborated on what constitutes nonviolent crimes, which can still have significant impacts on victims.

Despite some public division regarding immigration policies, with many Americans supporting the deportation of both violent and nonviolent offenders, there are concerns about the portrayal of these actions in the media. The Trump administration has attempted to manage public relations by emphasizing the removal of violent offenders.

Under Trump’s policies aimed at reducing immigration and heightening deportations, various economic indicators show improvement, including wage growth and decreasing inflation. Some argue that these reforms have positively affected American workers by driving up wages as a result of a reduced labor pool.

However, opposition remains from establishment Republicans and others who advocate for different economic models that support lower-wage immigrant labor in sanctuary cities.
