Karoline Leavitt receives praise from reporters after announcing her departure

Caroline Leavitt to Step Down as White House Press Secretary

Caroline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, is set to resign at the end of this month after serving for just over 18 months. At 28, she made history as the youngest press secretary, and her announcement came via Truth Social.

Leavitt has garnered a reputation for being a capable press secretary, making space for nontraditional media voices within the White House. However, there are those who believe she merely serves as a spokesperson for the president, tailoring her messaging to align closely with Donald Trump’s views.

In the weeks leading up to her departure, attention now turns to who will replace her.

Jackie Heinrich, a senior White House correspondent, commented live, noting that Leavitt excelled in her role and was very effective in communicating the administration’s messages. She mentioned that Leavitt’s accessibility was a significant asset, contrasting it with the current administration, where finding similar open communication under Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has been more challenging.

Another correspondent from NBC News emphasized Leavitt’s insider status and how crucial her role was as an advisor to Trump. Many reporters expressed admiration for her approachable nature during press conferences, often addressing both legacy and non-legacy media outlets alike. Mary Margaret Olohan from the Daily Wire pointed out that even when questions were challenging, Leavitt generally maintained fairness but could be assertive when she found questions to be misleading.

Some comments were less favorable, however. A correspondent who previously worked with Trump during his 2024 campaign described their interactions with Leavitt as strained, asserting that her credibility as an honest broker had diminished amid a strong requirement for loyalty to the president. An anonymous reporter noted Leavitt’s tendency to connect only with certain media figures while distancing herself from others.

With her influence expected to linger—as she had previously set new protocols for press participation—there’s currently no word on who her successor might be as Leavitt prepares to step down at the end of August.
