FBI Director Kash Patel Engages in Tense Exchange with NBC Reporter
During a press conference on Tuesday, FBI Director Kash Patel had a heated discussion with NBC News reporter Ryan Reilly regarding a $250 million lawsuit he filed against The Atlantic, which he accuses of publishing a fraudulent article.
The press conference involved Patel and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, mainly focused on charges against the Southern Poverty Law Center. It was during this event that Patel was asked about an article from The Atlantic, which raised safety concerns related to alleged excessive drinking and absenteeism.
Patel firmly denied ever being intoxicated at work and was about to conclude his remarks when Reilly, who was having trouble accessing the FBI’s internal system, sought clarification on Patel’s belief that he was fired by former President Donald Trump.
Patel responded, “Let’s do a poll: How many people believe that’s true?” as he sharply criticized the article’s claims.
The director condemned the reporting as “baseless,” asserting, “The problem with you and your baseless reporting is that it’s a complete lie. That was never said. That never happened. I will serve in this administration for as long as the president and the attorney general want.”
He also pointed out that every false report and unsubstantiated question diverts attention from the real issues at hand, specifically a significant project by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
As Reilly continued pressing questions, Patel escalated his rebuke, emphasizing, “The simple answer to your question is that you are lying.” Furthermore, he claimed he had “never been locked out” of the FBI’s systems, while Reilly suggested the lawsuit indicated otherwise. Blanche eventually intervened, urging Reilly to show more respect.
He stated, “Stop, you’re so rude. I know it might be part of your profession, but just stop. If you ask a question, he can answer it.”
The Atlantic had published a critical article titled “FBI Director MIA,” citing anonymous sources that claimed Patel experienced an emotional outburst due to difficulties with computer systems, engaged in excessive drinking, and was frequently absent, leading to security concerns.
In response, Patel vehemently rejected these allegations and filed the lawsuit on Monday against the media organization. The Atlantic called the lawsuit frivolous and expressed its intention to robustly contest it.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House and NBC News for a response.
