FBI Director on NBA Investigation: Just the Start
On Thursday, FBI Director Kash Patel shared insights during an interview on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.” He indicated that the recent announcement surrounding alleged Mafia ties and match-fixing among several NBA officials marks merely the “beginning” of the FBI’s broader investigation.
The FBI revealed at a press conference that over 30 individuals, including active players and coaches, have been arrested in connection with an alleged scheme involving sports betting and money laundering. Laura Ingraham, the host, probed Patel on what audiences should take away from these charges, likening the situation to a plot from a movie.
“It’s straightforward: We’re after the money. The NBA is involved, but it’s just one part of a larger puzzle. The public should understand that the FBI isn’t here to serve as the morality police,” Patel explained. “We are law enforcement. Anyone breaking the law—whether they’re playing in the NBA or coaching—we will pursue them.”
He emphasized that several individuals had collaborated with organized crime, specifically mentioning Cosa Nostra and four of New York’s five major crime families, who allegedly established extensive gambling operations. These operations included various forms of fraud and game-fixing to generate profits.
Patel continued, “These entities managed to extort millions from innocent victims while operating under the Mafia’s protection across the country. Today, we are announcing a nationwide crackdown involving more than 30 people because they have violated the law.”
The FBI’s press release noted that among those arrested were notable figures such as Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones.
Additionally, three suspects connected to the NBA, along with bettors Eric Earnest, Marveth Fairey, Shane Hennen, and De Niro Laster, face charges of conspiracy related to wire fraud and money laundering. They are accused of exploiting inside information for illegal betting activities.
Patel underlined that the investigation is ongoing and involves a “massive takedown” across various jurisdictions. “This has nothing to do with legal betting; rather, it concerns individuals in positions of power engaging in a range of criminal activities,” he stated. “Today’s operation is just the start.”
He added, “If you haven’t broken any laws, you shouldn’t be worried. However, when people complain about our actions, it often feels like they’re misinterpreting our motives.”
The FBI also indicated that funds were allegedly funneled to several Italian-American Mafia families, using technology and fraudulent methods to defraud victims of millions.
The NBA was first alerted in January regarding suspicious betting activities connected to Rozier, which reportedly began in March 2023.
