Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) said Sunday on CNN's “State of the Union” that President-elect Donald Trump's decision to select Kash Patel to lead the FBI is based on his goal of reforming the FBI. said.
Guest Casey Hunt said, “I'd like to start with the evening news from Mar-a-Lago, which was the announcement that Donald Trump intends to nominate Kash Patel to be FBI Director.” Do you have any reservations about Kash Patel taking on the role? ”
Lawler said, “No. Donald Trump has called for reform of the FBI and the Department of Justice. So I don't know why this is frankly surprising to people. President Trump has called for reform of the FBI and the Department of Justice. He nominated a man who had served as chief of staff at the Pentagon, a man who had served as deputy director of the National Security Council, and a man who had served as a senior staff member on the House Intelligence Committee. served as a federal prosecutor under the Obama administration, so he certainly has the experience needed for this role.President Trump has vowed to reform the Justice Department and FBI if he wins a second term. I don't think there's any question. Obviously, with Pam Bondi and Kash Patel, that's exactly what he's trying to do.”
“Are there any concerns that Patel might attack President-elect Trump's political opponents?” Hunt said. Patel has a list of names in his book. ”
“I don't think the American public is interested in revenge trips,” Lawler said. “But obviously, if people have done wrong in a public capacity, that's a concern. If they haven't done anything wrong, if they're following the law, there shouldn't be a problem. It’s about bringing it back.”
He added, “Obviously in recent years we've seen the FBI and the Department of Justice become weaponized in a way that has become completely political. That's not good for the American people. It's not good for our judiciary. It's not good for the system. The lack of trust that Americans have in the Department of Justice and the FBI is terrible. So clearly we need a reformed system that works for the American people and prosecutes criminals. I want it.”
