Kate Hudson on Her Career and Family Dynamics
Kate Hudson recently shared insights into her Hollywood journey during the Newport Beach Television Festival. She revealed that her career took a significant turn when she was offered a minor role in a project that felt like, in a way, she was “divorcing” her parents, Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, before landing her breakout role in “Party of Five.”
Hudson reflected on this moment, saying, “I got this part where they basically wanted me to divorce my parents and work as adults.” Though her mother, Hawn, was skeptical, it was indeed this role that propelled her forward. Hudson, who was a huge fan of the show, described the experience of being on set at just 16 as incredible.
The teen drama “Party of Five” debuted in 1994 and followed the story of siblings coping with their parents’ tragic death, a scenario that resonated with Hudson as she took on the role of Corey in its second season.

Despite not being officially released from her parents, Hudson later grew estranged from her father. Hawn and Bill Hudson’s marriage ended in 1982, after which Hawn began a long-term relationship with Kurt Russell, who has played a crucial role in Hudson’s upbringing.
During her appearance, Hudson also mentioned turning down a role in one of Russell’s films, emphasizing her desire not to be defined by her family’s legacy.
Hawn has discussed the challenges Hudson faced at the start of her career. In a previous podcast, Hudson expressed frustration at being constantly overshadowed by her family’s fame during interviews. Hawn offered support, telling her daughter that they would inevitably talk about each other, fostering acceptance of their intertwined lives.
Today, Hudson maintains a close relationship with Hawn, living just seven blocks away and enjoying frequent visits. As she noted, “She comes every day.” Their bond, strengthened over the years, highlights the unique interplay between familial support and individual aspirations in a demanding industry.
