Reflecting on a Career: Kate Hudson’s Journey

Kate Hudson recently took a moment to reflect on her acting career as she premiered her latest film, “Son San Bleu,” at AFI Fest in Los Angeles on October 26. The actress, now 46, has been in Hollywood for nearly three decades and spoke about what she considers the “greatest gift” of her time in the industry.

“The first thing that comes to mind is really the people and connections I’ve made along the way. Those always feel like the greatest gifts to me,” Hudson remarked during the event.

Feeling fortunate, she continued, “I’m lucky to be in a world filled with fascinating, intelligent, and wild individuals who often live outside the norm, yet they strive for more.” Hudson, who is the daughter of celebrated actress Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson, began her film career with the indie film “Desert Blue” in 1998.

However, it was her role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous” that truly launched her career in 2000. That performance earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Oscar nomination.

Her latest project features her alongside Hugh Jackman, where they portray a married couple in a Neil Diamond tribute band called Lightning & Thunder. The movie, “Song Sung Blue,” is inspired by a 2008 documentary of the same name.

“All I wanted was to do a musical,” Hudson said, highlighting the unique nature of this project. “This film, in particular, encapsulates everything I’ve studied throughout my life and career.” She expressed gratitude that screenwriter and director Craig Brewer wanted her for the role, admitting how the look – particularly her hair – transformed her experience.

“Once the hot rollers came in and came out, I felt like a completely different person,” Hudson described, recalling how she approached her character, Claire Sardina, who is married to Jackman’s character, Mike Sardina.

Hudson shared her admiration for Claire’s zest for life, stating, “She carries this light and joy, even in tough times, wanting to uplift everyone around her.” Those qualities, she felt, resonated with her during filming.

Interestingly, during this project, Hudson had the chance to meet Neil Diamond himself, which reshaped her understanding of the musician and his work. “It was a dream to get to know him. He’s such a wonderful, kind, loving person,” she shared, praising not only him but also his family.

Reflecting further, she noted, “Neil has this incredible ability to bring people together through his music. It’s distinctly American, yet it creates such happiness.” Hudson concluded with her thoughts on his songwriting, saying, “There’s something in the songs that inspires people to embrace one another and sing.”
