While all attention tends to be on Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, it was clear her focus was on Prince William during their enchanting evening out.
On Wednesday, the Prince and Princess of Wales made a stunning return to the red carpet for the first time in two years, gracing the annual Royal Variety Performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
The couple, both 43 years old, coordinated their looks in matching velvet outfits. Kate dazzled in a rich emerald V-neck gown, while William sported a classic bow tie with a velvet suit jacket.
Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, commented on the couple’s chemistry, noting that it was hard to overlook Kate’s loving gaze towards her husband during their glamorous night. “It’s a manifestation of love,” she remarked.
Chard also highlighted Kate’s sophistication in a Talbot Ranhoff dress paired with exquisite Greville diamond chandelier earrings, originally gifted to Queen Elizabeth by her friend Dame Margaret Greville. These earrings had also adorned the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The couple comfortably represented the royal family in the royal box. A particularly tender moment was captured when Prince William placed his hand on Kate’s back as he guided her through the hall.
Before settling into their seats, the Duchess received flowers from nine-year-old twins, Emily and Olivia Edwards. “My children will be so sad they missed the show. I want to keep it a big secret,” Kate whispered to the girls, adding a playful finger-to-lips gesture.
This performance marked the sixth time they attended the event together. Over their 14-year relationship, they previously enjoyed a rare double date with Crown Princess Victoria and Sweden’s Prince Daniel in 2023.
Last year, Kate had appeared only occasionally, as she was undergoing cancer treatment, but confirmed in January 2025 that her cancer was now in remission.
The Royal Variety Performance, a long-standing tradition since King George V’s reign, serves as a fundraiser for the Royal Variety Charity, which aids entertainment professionals in need.
Grant Harrold, a former butler to King Charles, commented on Kate’s suitability for William, expressing how the two seem perfectly matched. “They were so sweet together,” he recalled, noting he couldn’t envision William with anyone else.
He further described how Kate’s qualities not only make her a great partner in life but also in fulfilling royal duties. “She encourages him, and that’s exactly what you want in a future wife,” he said.
The enduring relationship between Kate and William has been likened to that of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, with Harrold stating it reminds him of “love, companionship, support, partnership, friendship.” He mentioned it felt like a fairy tale, echoing the storybook romance that many had hoped for when Prince Charles and the former Princess of Wales wed in 1981.
