Concerns Over Trump’s National Voter List Order
Journalist Katie Couric has raised alarms regarding President Donald Trump’s recent executive order aimed at establishing a national voter list. She suggested that this move indicates a desire to “ignore our elections.”
During a discussion with Sean Morales Doyle from the Brennan Center, Couric expressed unease about the implications of Trump’s actions. She stated, “There’s a lot of concern about these actions happening sporadically, but collectively, they suggest a serious push affecting our elections.”
Morales-Doyle emphasized the legal boundaries, noting that the president lacks the authority to dictate election rules. “It’s essential to understand,” he explained, “that this power belongs to the states and Congress, not the president. This is the second instance of such an executive order that attempts to reshape electoral procedures.” He added that the order seems intended to exert pressure on election officials.
Couric observed that the underlying message from the order might intimidate those tasked with overseeing elections, highlighting, “It appears to be designed to scare election officials into compliance.”
In response to the controversy, White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson defended the order, stating, “Only those who oppose honest efforts to secure our elections have something to fear. President Trump was elected to ensure elections are secure, and that’s what he’s focused on.”
The executive order directs the Department of Homeland Security to collaborate with various federal agencies to compile a database of voters, integrating federal citizenship and identity information. It also calls for the U.S. Postal Service to enhance protections for mail-in voting, particularly concerning noncitizens.
Since Trump began his second term, media reports have speculated that he might attempt to influence the 2026 midterm elections, with some even hinting at the possibility of canceling them entirely.
Following the signing of the order, states like Arizona, California, and Oregon promptly announced plans to challenge it in court. California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed concerns about the potential for election manipulation and the possibility of Trump canceling the 2028 presidential election.
