Katie Porter is described as a “master manipulator” by her ex-husband, Matthew Hoffman, who believes she represents many issues in today’s political landscape.
Hoffman, who is 50 years old, shared his thoughts on the outspoken liberal candidate vying to lead California, asserting that she’s not a suitable choice for the deeply Democratic state.
“I think it’s time we speak out,” he remarked, referencing footage showing Porter’s explosive temper and her difficult interactions with staff and journalists.
Ms. Hoffman, divorced from Porter in 2013, is concerned that her former spouse’s behavior is leading to a general disillusionment with politics.
Porter’s campaign has encountered challenges, such as a public disagreement with CBS journalist Julie Watts. During an interview, Porter accused Watts of being overly “logical” when discussing strategies for appealing to Donald Trump’s supporters.
Hoffman observed that the question posed was quite soft, suggesting that Porter should have focused on the importance of collaboration. Another clip surfaced, showing Porter abruptly telling a staff member to “fuck off” during a Zoom meeting in July 2021.
Hoffman noted that Porter’s contentious personality has strained relations, even with influential figures like Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff.
“She can’t get along with Nancy Pelosi,” he stated.
He criticized Porter’s claim that he was responsible for her loss to Schiff in the California Senate primary, dismissing her allegations of electoral sabotage.
Porter faced a significant defeat, finishing third behind Schiff and Republican Steve Garvey, leading Hoffman to assert that the system isn’t rigged; it’s just the nature of politics.
Despite their tumultuous past, Hoffman acknowledged that Porter possesses intelligence and is skilled at navigating political games.
After she proclaimed regret over her comments about the election being fraudulent, Hoffman emphasized that effective leadership relies on consensus-building—a quality he believes Porter lacks.
A spokesperson for Porter’s campaign highlighted that the couple maintains a functional co-parenting relationship with their three children, who primarily live with Porter.
Reflecting on their divorce, Hoffman described it as “terrible.” He initiated the proceedings, but soon after, Porter sought legal protection. Following a domestic incident, law enforcement became involved.
Divorce documents revealed allegations of emotional and verbal abuse from both parties, with incidents ranging from Porter’s temperamental outbursts to conflicts over household tasks.
Porter has framed herself in her political narrative as a victim of domestic violence, emphasizing her journey as a single mother.
Hoffman, however, believes she often exaggerates her experiences for sympathy.
Although they reached an agreement regarding their divorce and were not prosecuted for any actions during their split, Hoffman has since relocated to Oregon for work.
He mentioned missing his children, who reside in Southern California, trying to connect through FaceTime, but wishing for more in-person time.
While he avoids interactions with Porter, he often finds that she reaches out only when she needs assistance related to their kids.
Hoffman has moved on personally, yet the remnants of their complicated past linger. Meanwhile, Porter continues to campaign on promises of “hope and grit” as she gears up for the 2026 primary.
