Katie Porter’s Odds for California Governorship Wane
Katie Porter, a Democratic candidate for governor in California, has seen her chances of winning significantly decline, falling behind Senator Alex Padilla, who is not even in the race at the moment, as reported by CNN’s Harry Enten.
Porter has faced intense scrutiny, especially after a video surfaced showing her threatening to walk out of an interview over basic questions. Another clip captured her losing her temper with a staff member. According to Enten on “Laura Coates Live,” her probability of winning has plummeted from 40% earlier this month to just 16% now, placing her still behind Padilla, who hasn’t officially thrown his hat in the ring.
“That voice has been heard around the world, and I think Katie Porter is making history because she could destroy her chances of becoming the next governor of California faster than any candidate I’ve ever seen,” Enten remarked. He added, “Her chances are down by more than half.”
Interestingly, while Padilla is not yet running, his perceived likelihood to win has surged from 10% to 27% amidst Porter’s controversies. Enten pointed out that the recent events have captured public attention, leading to a tenfold increase in online searches for Porter compared to the week before.
A separate video from September showed Porter clashing with CBS News’ Julie Watts when asked how she would engage with the 40% of Californians who voted for Donald Trump. Her irritation became evident as follow-up questions led her to threaten to end the interview, stating, “I don’t want this to continue…”
Another resurfaced clip from 2021 showed her shouting at a staff member for attempting to correct her during an interview, telling them to “get out.” Additionally, her past has raised concerns; divorce court documents from 2023 referenced incidents of alleged abuse, including pouring boiling potatoes over her ex-husband’s head, as well as accusations of her mistreatment of staff.
Now, Padilla is being seen as the frontrunner for the governor’s race in 2026. He gained significant attention after disrupting a Department of Homeland Security press conference where he was led away in handcuffs.
