Aspiration Partners Inc., known for its controversial $28 million agreement with NBA player Kawhi Leonard for what some termed a “no-show job,” faced financial struggles, ultimately running out of funds in December 2022. Interestingly, despite its financial woes, the company continued to pay Leonard.
The San Francisco-based firm laid off several employees, including executives, as part of its financial downturn. Sports journalist Pablo Torre highlighted that Dennis J. Wong, a minority owner of the Clippers, had invested nearly $2 million into the company, which has struggled with its operations recently.
Despite the layoffs, Aspiration managed to pay Leonard a sum of $1.75 million, fulfilling the terms of an agreement they had with him even as the company was undergoing significant changes.
The NBA announced intentions to investigate Leonard’s agreement to ensure it adhered to the league’s salary cap regulations. Recently, Aspiration filed for bankruptcy and listed several creditors, including the Clippers, which reportedly have about $30 million in liabilities related to the company, and KL2 Aspire LLC, a firm linked to Leonard with $7 million owed.
Leonard’s connection to KL2, with “KL” representing his initials and “2” his jersey number, has drawn attention. Meanwhile, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had previously poured $50 million into Aspiration, leading to a partnership worth $300 million in September 2021, just following Leonard’s lucrative contract extension with the team.
Ballmer firmly denied any wrongdoing regarding the situation and expressed a willingness to cooperate with the investigation. He noted, “We did things with books,” emphasizing transparency in his dealings.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared insights after a recent meeting, stating that they would await findings from third-party investigations before making any decisions. He expressed caution, saying, “I don’t know what Kawhi was paid for. I don’t know what he did or didn’t. I’ll leave everything for the investigation.”
Attempts to reach the Clippers and Leonard for comments regarding the ongoing developments did not yield immediate responses.
