On Wednesday, Alivea Goncalves, sister of Kaylee Goncalves, delivered a powerful statement addressing Brian Kohberger, who was sentenced to life in prison. She criticized him harshly, saying he showed cowardice by attacking victims in their sleep.
“Want the truth? Here’s what you despise most. If you hadn’t attacked them while they were asleep—like a coward—Kaylee would have kicked your ass,” Alivea remarked, provoking applause from the courtroom.
During her impactful words, Kohberger remained expressionless but seemed to derive some twisted pleasure from her comments.
“You thrive on pain and fear, but I won’t feed your need,” she asserted, labeling him as a sociopath and a murderer and demanded he pay attention while she spoke.
Later, when given a chance to respond, Kohberger simply said, “I will decline with respect,” leaving many questions unaddressed.
The Goncalves family’s remarks stood out during the lengthy sentencing. Other victims’ families, including those of Madison Mogen and Zana Kahnor, also expressed their anger towards Kohberger.
The family of Ethan Chapin wasn’t present, having found closure in a plea deal that ensures Kohberger will spend life behind bars.
Alivea took aim at Kohberger’s clear blunders as a criminal, calling out his foolishness for using a gift card to purchase weapons online. “Did you really think that wouldn’t be noticed?” she asked, highlighting how law enforcement traced him almost immediately.
Kohberger, clad in an orange jumpsuit, visibly squirmed in his seat as she continued her critique, questioning his mental state and actions.
“If you were truly smart, would you be in this situation? Are you really afraid of being normal?” she questioned, insisting that he had worked hard to present himself as dangerous but revealed himself to be quite the opposite.
Goncalves didn’t hold back, calling him “slow, sloppy, weak, dirty,” implying he miscalculated the gravity of his actions.
This passionate speech was reflective of her family’s ongoing battle for justice following Kaylee’s tragic death along with her roommate on November 13, 2022. Their father, Steve Goncalves, also criticized Kohberger, laughing at the poorly gathered evidence that led to his capture.
“You’re a joke, a complete joke,” he stated, shaking his head at how easy it was for police to identify him.
Alivea further denounced him, saying his DNA was swiftly located and that his car was spotted at the crime scene. “You picked the wrong family to mess with,” she said, emphasizing their unity against him.
In closing, she said, “No one remembers you. You’re just a pair of initials lost to time.”
Judge Stephen Hippler responded to Kohberger’s silence, indicating that it’s doubtful he would ever truly comprehend his actions. He then sentenced Kohberger to life without the possibility of parole.
