Kayvon Thibodeaux enjoys a light moment with John Harbaugh at the Giants press conference

Giants Minicamp Recap: Highlights and Competition Insights

After the mandatory minicamp practice on Tuesday, a recognizable figure, now taking on a different role, posed a question to head coach John Harbaugh.

“What do you think about that defense?” asked edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeau, ducking behind the media in a playful attempt to escape Harbaugh’s line of sight.

“What do you think about the defense?” Coach Harbaugh replied, momentarily looking around. “Oh, there you are.”

It seems that Harbaugh and Thibodeau have hit it off quite well.

“I’ll tell you, this is typical behavior for this guy,” Harbaugh mentioned. “Did you all know this? He’s the top questioner.”

Harbaugh also suggested that Thibodeau might one day find himself among those analyzing football in the media.

“I’d be too rich for that, Coach,” Thibodeau joked in return.

In terms of the kicking competition, rookie Dominik Zvada is seemingly leading the pack, having outperformed Ben Sauls during the media-accessible practice.

With the release of veteran Jason Saunders earlier this spring, it looks like the Giants are going into training camp with two kickers vying for one position. However, they are open to recruiting additional talent if a better option surfaces.

In his rookie season last year, Sauls successfully made all eight field goal attempts during a late-season trial with the Giants. Zvada contributed to the University of Michigan’s 2024 national championship run but wasn’t selected in this year’s draft.

Harbaugh also had a conversation with Soles, a unique left-footed kicker, on Tuesday.

“I think this is all preparation for training camp, where the intensity will definitely increase,” Harbaugh noted. “They really all need to work on moving left. It’s the same mistake repeatedly.”

“That’s a good problem to have. He understands the issue from a technical perspective. He just needs to keep correcting it. I’m confident he will.”

Regarding Zvada, Coach Harbaugh mentioned, “He’s been doing well. Consistency is key, and he’s showing up.”

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had a stellar practice, showcasing his route-running skills, specifically outperforming rookie cornerback Colton Hood on two occasions. After catching a deep ball, Beckham celebrated by backpedaling into the end zone.

Meanwhile, Hood, a second-round draft pick, did manage a defensive highlight by knocking a pass intended for Darnell Mooney out of bounds along the right sideline.

Wide receiver Darren Kumble also made an impressive catch, snagging a pass from Jameis Winston with one hand. However, shortly after, Winston was intercepted by linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, and cornerback Greg Newsome II intercepted a pass aimed at Calvin Austin III from Jackson Dart.
