PHILADELPHIA — Giants React to Controversial Play During Eagles Game

The umpires referred to it as “advance,” but players from the Giants viewed the situation quite differently.

“That’s just unfair, man,” Kayvon Thibodeau expressed.

During the game against the Eagles, Jalen Hurts executed a tush push on fourth-and-inches in a tie game early in the second quarter. He managed to break through for the first down, but Thibodeau snatched the ball away from him.

“Referees have a challenging job in some aspects because they don’t always know when to intervene,” Thibodeau said. “It’s tough to defend against—if you halt the initial push and the ref doesn’t blow the whistle, the play just carries on.”

Thibodeau mentioned that officials claimed the decision to award the advance was made even before Hurts reached for the ball.

“To me, it seems totally off,” he added, although he refrained from being too critical when reminded by teammate Brian Burns that he could face a fine. “I mean, it was a great call by the referee,” he concluded diplomatically.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll tried to raise an objection, but he was informed that further advancement couldn’t be reevaluated. Undeterred, he challenged the ball’s placement, hoping to turn the ball over, but that result didn’t go his way.

Daboll noted, “The guys in the booth were really insistent on this play. I had confidence in their assessment, but it didn’t pan out. I won’t delve into the specifics, though.”

The tush push has become one of the most debated plays in the NFL. Interestingly, the Giants were among the 22 teams that voted in favor of banning the play during the offseason.

“I won’t get fined,” Burns stated. “It’s tricky. Just two weeks ago, they allowed the push against us. We halted that effort, and yet they called it immediately. In this case, the play went our way, and I genuinely believe it should have resulted in a turnover. That’s an odd decision.”

The Eagles promptly turned their first down into a game-changing touchdown, ultimately winning 38-20.

On another note, cornerback Cordale Flott, who suffered a concussion, missed the latter half of the game. Rookie Corey Black, a seventh-round pick recently signed from the Jets’ practice squad, stepped in but allowed a touchdown.

Tight end Daniel Bellinger didn’t play in the fourth quarter due to a neck injury.

Right tackle Jermaine Elemunor had to step out for testing in the locker room just before halftime.

“Just give me a chance to punch back,” said Elemunor.

Wide receiver Jarrin Hiatt, a 2023 third-round pick, was a healthy scratch for the first time, as the Giants opted to use undrafted rookie Beau Collins and practice squad player Lil’ Jordan Humphrey as backup receivers.

Humphrey will need to be added to the 53-man roster for the next game on Sunday.

Other players who were inactive due to injury included safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo, along with several healthy scratches like guard Evan Neal, tackle James Hudson III, and quarterback Jameis Winston.
