Attack on Iran's export terminal might cause increase in oil prices, analyst warns

Potential U.S. Action on Iran’s Oil Export Hub

Retired four-star Army General Jack Keene has suggested that the United States could consider taking control of Iran’s main oil export facility, which he described as a critical economic lifeline for the Iranian regime. As the U.S. military continues to dismantle Tehran’s military capacities, Keene emphasized the vulnerability of this hub.

During an appearance on Sunday Morning Futures, he stated, “We can occupy Kharg Island whenever we decide, but that isn’t our current plan.” He also pondered the possibility of future actions, saying, “The president has options, and this could be something to consider later. Whether we occupy or blockade it, the choices are numerous.”

Keene argued that such a takeover would put the Iranian regime in a “checkmate” position due to its heavy reliance on Kharg Island for its economy. He detailed, “We’d control all major assets there. It accounts for half of their budget, around 60% of their revenue, and a large portion of their oil distribution.” His words suggest that, while the move would be significant, it would be strategically timed by the U.S.

His comments resonate with the broader context of U.S. and Israeli military activities focused on Iran, particularly on eroding the regime’s military operations and threatening its energy pipelines. This discussion follows President Trump’s announcement of recent bombings aimed at the island, underscoring its pivotal role in Iran’s crude oil exports—around 90% of which traverse Kharg Island, mainly destined for China and India.

In the bigger picture, the significance of Kharg Island extends beyond Iranian trade; it affects the global oil marketplace as well.
