Keenan Allen set to play in Chargers' final game to pursue bonuses

Keenan Allen Will Play Despite Potential Risks

This week, Keenan Allen announced he will be on the field for the Chargers’ last regular-season game on Sunday, despite the shifting dynamics around him.

The 33-year-old wide receiver is set to take on the Broncos and has over $1 million in bonuses up for grabs. According to a conversation he had with ESPN, he mentioned the financial incentives that are at play.

Specifically, he can pocket $750,000 with just six more catches.

Then there’s the possibility of another $250,000 if he can snag nine extra receiving yards. And, of course, scoring two touchdowns could net him an additional $250,000.

Interestingly, he shared a light moment with backup quarterback Trey Lance, who will be stepping in for Justin Herbert this week at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.

Allen quipped to Lance, “Hey, Trey, I got these six and I’m going to go eat,” to which Lance joked back, “I need a new car.” Their exchange highlights the fun side of competition, even amid these pressures.

Allen’s performance this season has been solid—he played in all 16 games, tallying up 74 catches for 741 yards and four touchdowns. Given that he has consistently racked up receiving yards this season, adding nine yards shouldn’t be overly challenging.

Reaching the six-catch mark could be more of a challenge; he’s only done that three times so far. If things go awry against Denver’s defense, he could still secure up to $500,000 with 134 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Kickoff is at 4:25 p.m. ET. While the Chargers are seeking a wild-card spot, for Allen, there’s definitely extra motivation on the line.
