Tribute to Keith Browner
Keith Browner, a notable player from the University of Southern California and an NFL linebacker for five years, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday at the age of 63, as shared by his son, Keith Browner Jr.
According to reports, Browner died at his home in San Leandro, California. His family expressed shock at the sudden nature of his passing.
The exact cause of his death has not been disclosed yet.
Keith Jr. mentioned that his father had been experiencing stomach issues on Monday night, which led to vomiting and fatigue. Earlier on Tuesday morning, he had planned to visit the hospital for these symptoms.
Tragically, Browner collapsed on the floor next to his girlfriend just before he was about to leave for the hospital.
During his time at USC from 1981 to 1983, Browner became a standout player and served as team captain in 1983. He earned the Elmer C. “Gloomy Gus” Henderson Award in 1982, which is presented for playing the most minutes in a season.
The Buccaneers selected him as the 30th pick in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft. Over his career, Browner played in 64 games and started 44 of them. He donned the Buccaneers’ colors from 1984 to 1986, spent the 1987 season with both the 49ers and Raiders, and wrapped up his NFL journey with the Chargers in 1988, accumulating 10.5 sacks throughout his career.
Keith Browner came from an athletic family; his late brother Ross was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Interestingly, multiple siblings also achieved athletic acclaim. Another brother, Joey, excelled at USC and then moved to the NFL, while Jim and Willard played at Notre Dame, and their brother Gerald played at Georgia.
Reflecting on their family’s legacy, Willard once stated, “There is no other family like ours. All six of our brothers were All-Americans in high school, two of whom were first-round NFL draft picks, and our success extends into the next generation.”
Browner’s legacy continues as his son played for USC’s rival, California, and had a brief NFL stint with the Texans in 2014.
