Ellison’s Defense of Socialism Sparks Backlash
Minnesota’s Democratic Attorney General Keith Ellison attempted to defend socialism during a CNN interview, but his comments were met with widespread mockery on social media.
In conversation with CNN opinion writer Dean Obeidallah, Ellison suggested that the establishment of a police force is, in fact, a form of socialism.
Obeidallah chimed in, mentioning elements like Medicare and Social Security as socialist aspects of today’s systems. He asked, “What about the police? Who funds them? Your taxes! That’s socialism, my friend!”
Ellison elaborated, stating, “You do not hire your own private police, fire, or water inspection services!”
A video of Ellison’s comments circulated online, drawing significant criticism from members of the Republican National Committee.
Republican Majority Whip Tom Emmer expressed disbelief, labeling Ellison’s points as some of the “stupidest” he’s ever heard from a leftist in Minnesota, claiming Ellison would rather misallocate taxpayer money than prioritize public safety.
An additional critic noted that Ellison’s reasoning resembled arguments made by elementary school children trying to seem intelligent. Someone else remarked, “Calling tax-funded police officers socialist is just plain dishonest. Socialism involves government control over production, not simply ensuring law enforcement.”
Moreover, some critics pointed out the contradiction in Ellison’s stance, citing his past support for efforts to defund the police.
One commentator quipped, “Sure, that’s why he pushed to defund the Minneapolis Police Department—because he hates socialism.” Another social media user also commented on Ellison’s views, linking them to his past assertions about systemic racism in law enforcement.
Obeidallah is known for making controversial comparisons, like juxtaposing pro-life Republican policies with the brutalities inflicted by the Taliban. Ellison has also shown support for Antifa in past comments.
