Darryl Strawberry’s No. 18 was retired during the Mets’ game at Citi Field on Saturday, but it was the two other jersey numbers, including his own, that puzzled Keith Hernandez during the SNY broadcast.
During a Mets-Diamondbacks game in Queens where the Mets were losing, there were two fans in the stands wearing Mets jerseys in the bottom of the first inning.
One was wearing Hernandez’s No. 17 and the other was wearing Gary Carter’s No. 8.

Hernandez’s broadcast partner, Gary Cohen, pointed out that both Hernandez and Carter served as captains during their time with the Mets.
Hernandez responded: “That’s right. It adds up to 15, right? 17 plus 8 is 15.”
Cohen solved Hernandez’s math problem by saying that the two jersey numbers added together equaled 25, drawing laughs from those in the booth.
“Amazing,” Cohen said.
It’s unclear how Hernandez made the mistake, but it came in the midst of another ugly loss for the Mets, who fell to 3-6 at home on Sunday against Arizona.
