Keith Hernandez not a fan of ‘grotesque’ Mets chant

The Mets’ slogan isn’t uniting everyone.

As the team played the final game of a four-game road trip in Pittsburgh, SNY cameras cut to Mets fans holding up “OMG” signs and yelling “Let’s go Mets!”

However, former MVP and current commentator Keith Hernandez weighed in on another variation of the slogan.

“Unless you add an F to the other one,” Hernandez said, “I don’t like F.”

Hernandez went on to describe a negative experience he had with a fan asking for “LFGM” instead of “LGM” while signing an autograph.

“They ask me if I have something to sign, and I’m like, ‘Can you sign LF…?’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, I don’t do that,'” Hernandez said. “It’s very, very grotesque.”

As the Mets sit at 16-8 in their last 24 games, this team appears to be propelled by two other-dimensional phenomena.

The first incident occurred after McDonald’s mascot Grimmus threw the ceremonial first pitch before a game against the Miami Marlins on June 13. The incident prompted six straight wins and was even dubbed the “Grimus Effect.”

The other was when second baseman Jose Iglesias performed his song “OMG” on the field after the Mets’ 7-2 win over the Astros on June 28. The song went viral around the world and embodied the team’s incredible energy.

Ironically, Hernandez’s comments don’t seem to reflect how the Mets themselves feel about the profane remark.

in July 2022 Articles All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso spoke to The Players’ Tribune in praise of “LFGM” and what it stands for.

“This is about the New York Mets, get it?,” Alonso wrote. “We represent the greatest city in the world. All of us, whether players or fans, should I am proud to be able to take part in this activity. should “As if you were serious about LFGM. As if it matters.”

The superstar has never shied away from the phrase before.

During his rookie year in August 2019, Alonso tweeted a clip called “LFGM” that resonated with Mets fans.

Alonso uttered those four letters in his post-match interview.

Hernandez’s comments may not have been a good sign for the Mets, who gave up five runs in the sixth inning to lose to the Pirates.

The Mets are just 2.5 games out of the final National League wild-card spot and begin a three-game series against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.
