Keith Hernandez Enters Free Agency Again

Keith Hernandez is once more navigating the waters of free agency. His contract with SNY has concluded following the network’s 20th-season game coverage.

The 71-year-old expressed a desire to keep his role alongside former teammate and fellow analyst Ron Darling, as well as play-by-play commentator Gary Cohen. “My contract has ended, but I really want to stay in the booth,” Hernandez shared in a Q&A released on Friday. “I genuinely enjoy my work.”

Hernandez is a well-known figure in what many fans consider the top baseball broadcast team, comprising the “Gary, Keith and Ron” trio. He brings a colorful analysis focused on gameplay, or as he calls it, the “Fundies.”

Before the 2023 season, Hernandez signed a three-year deal to remain with SNY, marking an impressive two-decade run with the network, making it the longest tenure for any Mets announcer.

Joining SNY in 2006, Hernandez made a transition from his previous work on MSG’s Mets broadcasts. Over his two decades, he earned three Emmys—back in 2009, 2012, and 2015—for his role as a “Top Sports Analyst.”

The former National League MVP in 1979 has enhanced his already stellar reputation with the Mets, leading to his induction into the team’s hall of fame and the retirement of his number 17 jersey. Hernandez played for the Mets from 1983 to 1989, contributing to their championship win in 1986.

He also made a mark with the Cardinals from 1974 to 1983, wrapping up a 17-season career with 43 games for Cleveland.

In the same Q&A, Hernandez encouraged Mets baseball executive David Stearns to make crucial additions this offseason in light of the team’s recent struggles. “Absolutely. Pitching has always been key,” he mentioned. “Just look at the ’69 Mets, who really excelled in that area—some things in this game feel like they never change.”
