Keith Hernandez was left 'stunned' by Pete Alonso's departure from the Mets

Mets Offseason Changes Leave Keith Hernandez Unsure

The Mets’ recent offseason has left one of their iconic figures, Keith Hernandez, almost at a loss for words.

During a segment on SNY’s “Sports Night,” Hernandez shared his thoughts on the organization after Pete Alonso signed a substantial five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles.

This news follows the earlier trade of Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers and Edwin Diaz’s recent agreement for a three-year, $69 million deal with the Dodgers.

Hernandez, who has long been associated with the Mets as an announcer, expressed that the changes felt unprecedented. “I’m a little speechless,” he remarked. “This is explosive. I don’t recall seeing such a shift in direction during my years with the Mets. It feels significant.”

Given the Mets’ disappointing season that resulted in missing the playoffs, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns emphasized the need to enhance “run prevention.” This focus aims at bolstering the team’s defense and pitching staff.

In the trade involving Nimmo, the Mets brought in second baseman Marcus Semien, known for his defensive skills in center field. However, there remain gaps at first base and left field, not to mention ongoing issues within the pitching staff.

Mets owner Steve Cohen acknowledged fans’ frustrations about the losses of three favored players but remained hopeful about the future of the team. “I get the fan reaction,” Cohen communicated. “There’s still much offseason left to build a playoff-caliber team.”
