Keith Urban admits he was willing ‘to do anything’ to kickstart career

In 2001, Keith Urban was willing to “do anything” to get his career back on track, including posing for Playgirl.

On a recent episode of SiriusXM's “Literally! With Rob Lowe,” Urban explained that he was approached with the idea by someone at his record company more than 20 years ago and decided to go with it.

“The guy at my record company said, 'You can run this article in Playgirl, and they'll put a big, long, nice piece on the record.'” So I… I thought, 'Great,' so let's go do a photoshoot,” Urban told Lowe. “I was like, 'Oh, I get it.' Luckily, I play guitar, not harmonica.”

“It was a coincidence,” Rowe replied. “So at least you knew who you were by the time you got to the photo shoot…”

“Yeah. Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah. Apparently they're willing to do whatever it takes to move forward,” Urban agreed.

Elsewhere on the podcast, Urban and Rowe talked about the country music star's famous marriage to Nicole Kidman. Urban admitted that while many of his songs are about his wife, not all of them are.

“I always think of people who have famous partners or who write about relationships. Have you ever thought, 'Oh, that's what Nicole's talking about?' Do you understand what I mean? Is there such a thing? ” asked Rowe.

“I mean, have you ever had a problem where people are like, 'If I'm going to write something, I'm going to write a character that I don't understand, that I know things aren't going well?' ” Then you think, “People are going to think this is about me and Nicole.” Has it ever entered your consciousness?

“Oh yeah. Yeah. People think everything I write is about her, and of course a lot of things are, but a lot of things aren't,” Urban replied. “I mean, I’ve lived my life, I’ve had other experiences, but they don’t necessarily have to be personal experiences.

“Maybe it's an observational thing. You know, I recorded this song called 'Brown Eyed Baby,' and X number of people were like, 'You can't sing a song about a brown-eyed girl.' That's what I was saying. I mean, she has blue eyes. She must have been very angry,” and I’m like, “Not really.”

“No. It's just a song. It's just a song,” Urban insisted. “People think that, I don't know. I mean, I don't think Dolly Parton actually worked a 9-to-5 job, so that's definitely not the case.”
