Keith Urban recently tweaked the lyrics of a romantic song about Nicole Kidman shortly before she filed for divorce. During a concert, the 57-year-old Urban performed “The Fighter,” a song from 2017 featuring Carrie Underwood, inspired by his relationship with 58-year-old Kidman.
In the original lyrics, Urban sings, “When they tryna reach you, baby I’ll be a fighter.” However, during the concert, he modified the line to, “When they get to you, Maggie will become your guitar player.” This change was caught on Instagram by rising country singer Maggie Baugh, who was performing with him that night. She noted in her post, “He just said that,” just three days before the split became public.
Urban previously released a video in 2016 of him and Kidman singing together in a car, where he also performed “Fighter.” Kidman had expressed her love for the song, and there was a tender moment shared between them when he covered the national anthem of love.
Reflecting on the song’s meaning, Urban mentioned how it stemmed from early discussions in his marriage, emphasizing the notion of wanting to protect and heal his partner. It seems to capture a deep vow, which is what made the recent changes seem poignant.
Now, after 19 years of marriage, Urban and Kidman’s sudden split has come as a shock. Kidman filed for divorce in Nashville, stating “irreconcilable differences” as the reasoning. In court documents, she noted the separation date as September 30.
According to reports, they have established a co-parenting plan for their daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, with plans for the children to spend more time with Urban.
