Kellen Moore’s telling comments with Derek Carr’s Saints future murky
The new Saints head coach gave Derek Kerr the support he made as NFL quarterback, but he wasn't explicitly his quarterback.
Kellen Moore, featured in New Orleans on Thursday, was a non-committee on the quarterback who led the saints in the past two playoffless seasons.
“Derek is a tremendous quarterback in this league,” Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-winning Eagles, told reporters at his first press conference with his new team. “I've been very respectful of him. The journey he's been on. He's the starter of this league. He's a premier player in this league. He's been on a great journey. Apparently from Fresno State. I'm heading to the Raiders and I'm here now.
“I'm really excited to work with him and go through this process, just like the players on this roster. I came here a few days ago and I'll be going on this journey with all of them I'm really excited.”

Of course, Carr is not the same as all the other players on the roster. He is still two years left on a four-year, $150 million contract, earning cap hits of $51 million and $61 million in the next two seasons, respectively. Saints are expected to have more than $48 million dead money in hell with salary caps and have the smallest cap space in all football, and it might be best to restructure or trade Carly's agreements. It's not possible.
Moore was asked for the second time about Kerr and whether the team would make a quarterback decision.
“I consider it to be Derek Kerr the incredible starting quarterback in this league,” Moore told reporters. “We are fortunate to have him and we are excited to be able to make this process happen as we build it together.”
The Saints finished 9-8 in 2023 with an outstanding car. Last season, New Orleans were 5-5 in carplay, but some injuries knocked him in seven other games – all losses.

Carr, 34, next month, knows that financial debate is coming.
“That's how life is a quarterback,” Kerr told ESPN in January. “Whenever the season doesn't end [you wanted]that's who people see. “Well, what money can you release to get this and do this”…and I'm totally confident in what I put on the tape. If so, I'm not worried and it had to change. I'm sure you can play anywhere else, whatever it is. And I'm not worried about that, but at the same time, I just want to win. ”
