Kelsey Grammer Discusses Modern Hollywood on Podcast
Kelsey Grammer, the star of ‘Frasier,’ recently shared his thoughts on the current state of Hollywood during an appearance on the “Katie Miller Podcast.” He remarked that it seems like Hollywood is focused on reinterpreting classics, although he admitted he hasn’t seen “The Odyssey.” He expressed that sometimes the film industry can be a bit too overt with its messaging, which can become tiresome.
Grammer pointed out that Hollywood’s portrayal of the past often overlooks its historical context. He stated, “I think in the olden days, England was probably full of white people. I think its cultural and historical significance should be respected a little bit.” This comment seems to reflect a belief that adaptations sometimes stray too far from their origins.
When Miller asked whether Hollywood might return to better storytelling, Grammer responded, “Hollywood isn’t very good at telling people what to see, because then they fail.” He noted that many recent adaptations have already faced criticism, such as Disney’s “Snow White,” which led to significant financial losses.
Interestingly, Pixar’s chief creative officer, Pete Docter, recently revealed a shift in strategy. He explained that their focus should be more on storytelling than simply chasing profits. Grammer agreed, suggesting that when projects flop, they might signify a greater issue around current cinematic trends. He expressed gratitude for the new “Odyssey” adaptation but also hinted that it might be too far removed from traditional narratives.
In recent years, films like “The Little Mermaid” and “Cleopatra” have sparked discussions about cultural representation and adaptation choices. Notably, Emily Wilson’s feminist translation of “The Odyssey” has drawn attention, but Christopher Nolan’s film has also been critiqued for modernizing characters and dialogue.
