Indiana Fever’s Playoff Journey Ends in Game 5

The Indiana Fever’s quest for the WNBA Finals came to a close on Tuesday night as they lost to A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces, finishing 107-98 in Game 5.

Kelsey Mitchell stood out as a key player for the Fever during a challenging season, marred by injuries to teammates like Kate Rinklerk and Sophie Cunningham. However, she experienced a concerning moment on the court.

During the fourth quarter, as she attempted to drive along the baseline, Mitchell briefly held on to an official’s arm, seemingly in need of assistance. It was alarming to see her collapse soon after, prompting teammates and staff to rush to her aid.

She was taken off the court and transported to a hospital due to severe convulsions. The team later announced that Mitchell was diagnosed with a condition called striated muscle dissolution, which impairs muscle function.

On Wednesday, Mitchell shared her unsettling experience, detailing how her muscles had stopped responding. She described feeling a sense of panic as numbness took over her legs for about five to seven seconds. “It was a really frightening experience,” she noted, expressing gratitude that she was safe.

Mitchell, a three-time All-Star, had an impressive season, especially given the absence of other key players. She participated in 44 games and recorded averages of 20.2 points and 3.4 assists per game.

Now, the Las Vegas Aces are set to face the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Finals.
