Kelsey Plum of the LA Sparks describes WNBA refereeing as 'unfair'

Valkyries Edge Sparks in Overtime Clash

The Golden State Valkyries, in their inaugural season, showcased a fierce contest against the Los Angeles Sparks, ultimately securing an overtime victory in Los Angeles on Monday night.

Kelsey Plum spent 41 minutes on the court, ending the match with a team-high 24 points in a final score of 89-81. Even with such a significant presence, she managed only six free throws throughout the game.

Post-game, Plum appeared visibly frustrated, commenting on the officiating with a palpable disappointment. She stressed that the referees seemed to overlook crucial foul calls during the game.

She expressed concern that her aggressive play style should have warranted more free throws. It was clear her anxiety levels were heightened, particularly regarding her interactions with the officiating crew.

“I’m likely to face a fine for saying this,” Plum noted, “but it’s unbelievable that I shot just six free throws, especially considering my aggressive plays toward the basket.” She added, “I’ve had injuries before, and yet it feels like opponents can get away with minimal contact while I’m often left scarred.”

With a tone of resignation, Plum remarked that she had approached the referees in a friendly manner prior to the game, even offering a prayer before stepping onto the court. Her visible frustration resonated with her teammates as well.

Sparks coach Lynn Roberts shared similar sentiments, stating that excessive contact from the opposing team often goes unpunished, indicating a need for the league to address these concerns. He expressed his discomfort with the apparent leniency given to opponents with aggressive play against Plum.

In a light-hearted moment, Plum joked that if the league responds with a penalty, she’d take it upon herself to lift the coach’s spirits.

Following this defeat, the Sparks’ record now stands at 3-7. Plum is set to face off against her former team, the Las Vegas Aces, on Wednesday as the WNBA Commissioner Cup rolls on. During her time with the Aces, she clinched two WNBA championships.
