Ken Paxton to Sara Gonzales: 'We will uncover the truth' following her shocking H-1B report

Impact of Investigative Reporting on Texas H-1B Program

Recent investigative efforts by journalist Sara Gonzalez have led to significant developments regarding potential abuse and fraud within Texas’ H-1B visa program. Following her reporting, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an order directing all state agencies and public universities to halt new H-1B visa applications and petitions until May 2027. The order also includes a review of the current H-1B program, aiming to prevent fraud and abuse in taxpayer-funded entities, while prioritizing employment for American workers in Texas.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has now joined this initiative. He announced on Wednesday that his office would conduct a thorough investigation into the H-1B program and has filed civil investigative demands against three companies in North Texas suspected of fraudulent practices. These demands require the companies to provide employee information, business credentials, and other documentation supporting their legitimacy.

In light of the ongoing investigation, Paxton emphasized that if evidence of fraud surfaces at the companies being scrutinized, they “could lose their ability to operate in Texas and potentially have to reimburse the state.” Gonzalez expressed that uncovering the truth will not be easy, noting, “this is like peeling an onion… every layer you pull back seems to lead to more confusion and often addresses that don’t really exist.”

However, Paxton remains optimistic about the expertise of his team. “The good thing is we have a lot of experience tackling issues like this. We’ve dealt with numerous companies that deceive consumers. We will uncover the truth,” he asserted. Gonzalez is curious about the steps that might follow if fraud is indeed identified. “I’m not directly involved in cancelling their business licenses, but if we succeed, the courts will likely intervene,” Paxton explained, adding that provable consumer deception could lead to significant financial penalties for the companies involved.

Gonzalez mentioned that there are many eyes on this situation, hinting that various scammers involved may be nervous and monitoring developments closely. “I imagine some of these individuals are watching right now, possibly sending messages to each other,” she speculated. In a forthright tone, Paxton stated, “We will get to the bottom of this. If other companies are involved in unlawful practices, we will launch investigations.”
