Kenan Thompson made a fun announcement during a recent game against the Anaheim Ducks, showcasing his script for “The Mighty Ducks 4.” This comes after Disney turned down a similar idea from co-star Emilio Estevez.
In a clip shared by Sportsnet, Thompson, 47, donned a “Tyler” jersey, paying homage to his character Russ Tyler from the 1994 film “D2: The Mighty Ducks.” He spoke about the 1996 sequel, “D3: The Mighty Ducks,” while holding his script high in the stands.
The “SNL” star also led the crowd in some lively, albeit made-up chants, and mentioned that the moment is captured in his own Instagram post.
“Glad to be home. 🏒🥅That was such a great game!!! GO DUCKS!!!!👏🏾🙌🏾,” Thompson expressed in the post’s caption.
He was at the Honda Center to celebrate Ducks forward Alex Killorn reaching his 1,000th NHL game, during which the Ducks won against the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3.
Back in 2022, Thompson mentioned to ESPN how “The Mighty Ducks” helped fuel his enthusiasm for hockey. He recalled how fans express their appreciation for the film and how it inspired them on their own hockey journeys. It’s clear there’s a strong connection there.
Estevez, known for playing coach Gordon Bombay, previously drafted a script for “The Mighty Ducks 4.” He revealed that Disney vetoed his proposal, which aimed to address issues from the “Game Changers” series.
He envisioned a plot where Coach Bombay returns to coach a new, all-girls team in the Women’s Professional Hockey League, with the storyline involving his daughters and a transition from roller derby. “It’s set in a glamorous, modern context,” he explained.
However, Estevez noted that Disney was uninterested in pursuing his vision, emphasizing that he lacks rights to the franchise.
This isn’t the first bump for Estevez; he stepped away from the TV series after just one season in 2021, reportedly over disagreements with ABC Signature’s COVID-19 vaccination policies. He insisted at the time that his exit was merely due to contractual issues, not drama behind the scenes.
