Seaplane Crash in Washington Coast
A seaplane operated by Kenmore Airways crash-landed off the Washington coast on Thursday, catching fire and prompting a significant rescue operation that led to several injuries, according to authorities.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call around 5:25 p.m. local time, reporting that the seaplane had to make an emergency landing in North Beach Shallow Bay near Sucia Island before bursting into flames.
Officials confirmed that all ten passengers and the pilot have been identified.
Injuries Reported
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office indicated that injuries varied from head trauma to broken bones and lacerations among the passengers. Four individuals were transported to nearby hospitals, with at least one reported in critical condition. Thankfully, there have been no reported fatalities yet.
Kenmore Air stated they are working closely with authorities and will provide updates as the situation evolves.
Focus on Passengers
David Guggell, the Chief Executive Officer of Kenmore Air, expressed relief that all passengers are safe, emphasizing the company’s immediate attention on ensuring proper medical care and support for those affected. He also thanked the U.S. Coast Guard and local emergency responders for their quick action. The airline continues to assist investigators and will circulate verified updates as new information surfaces.
The aircraft in question was a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter, which was en route from Lake Union in Seattle to Roche Harbor Marina in the San Juan Islands, a normal route for the airline.
Interestingly, a spokesperson mentioned that people living in the area often use these seaplane services. It’s quite common for locals to take to the skies this way.
Emergency Response
Numerous agencies coordinated to send boats and emergency personnel to the crash site. The U.S. Navy also participated in the response, and three air ambulance helicopters were dispatched for the injured.
Fire and rescue crews from Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and San Juan Island were also on hand to assist. As of now, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
