Kenneth Walker III seeks to break the Chiefs' 1,000-yard rushing streak.

Kenneth Walker III made quite a name for himself last season as one of the top running backs in the NFL. He was instrumental in leading the Seattle Seahawks to Super Bowl LX and was named MVP after their victory over the New England Patriots in February.

As the offseason rolled around, questions emerged about Walker’s future. Would he remain in Seattle, or would he seek opportunities elsewhere? During the Super Bowl LX parade, Seahawks GM John Schneider caught some attention when he mentioned trying to negotiate a new contract with Walker right there amidst the celebrations. Walker denied this later on social media, but the story took a different turn as things settled down.

Walker, one of the highly coveted free agents, ended up signing a three-year deal worth $43.1 million with the Kansas City Chiefs. This contract places him fourth among NFL running backs in terms of average annual salary. When asked about Schneider’s comments regarding missing the opportunity to win MVP, Walker reflected, “I didn’t see him say that, but you know what’s going on with running backs nowadays. They seem to think they can replace you. If that’s how he feels, well, that’s on him.”

He added, quite clearly, that he’s not concerned about the past. “I’m focused on what I need to do here, understanding the strategy and making an impact.”

While Schneider acknowledged Walker’s impressive performance as a Seahawk, he also highlighted other players like George Holani and rookie Emmanuel Wilson, who recently joined from the Green Bay Packers. Walker’s former teammate, Zach Charbonnet, is also on the mend from an ACL injury as they gear up for the 2026 season. Schneider even drafted a promising running back, Jadarian Price from Notre Dame, to reinforce the team.

However, Walker seems ready to move on. He was excited about what the Chiefs had to offer during the free agency negotiation phase and finalized his signing on the first day. Walker expressed joy upon seeing quarterback Patrick Mahomes showing enthusiasm about having him on the team.

“It’s been fantastic,” Walker remarked about adjusting to Mahomes. “He’s such a vocal leader and manages the offense really well. Plus, he’s incredibly humble. Getting to know him and the rest of the team has been a great experience, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen those connections throughout the year.”

Having achieved his second 1,000-yard rushing season with the Seahawks, Walker acknowledges the Chiefs haven’t seen a 1,000-yard rusher since Kareem Hunt in 2017. He recognizes why they signed him and expects to deliver on the field, both running and catching passes. “Yet, accolades aside, I’m looking for more than just one good season,” he says frankly.

Walker admitted that he’s not satisfied with just past accomplishments. “I’m quite honest about that. Until I retire, there’s always room for more achievement. My goal is to contribute positively in every possible way and help my team win games.”

Walker’s Unique Pregame Ritual

Chiefs players and coaches are in for a surprise: Walker has a strong pregame ritual that includes brushing his teeth before heading onto the field. His commitment to oral hygiene is serious.

Partnering with Oral-B, the NFL’s official toothbrush brand, felt like a natural match for Walker, who has been using their electric toothbrushes since middle school. “I always had to brush my teeth before games. My dad was always insisting on it,” he laughed, adding, “Oral health is often overlooked, but it’s really crucial. It can impact other body parts. It’s essential to maintain good oral health.”
