Kentucky Derby: A timeline of Bob Baffert’s story with Churchill Downs

The 151st Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 3rd, at the renowned Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, marking the return of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert after a four-year absence. Baffert, an immensely successful figure in horse racing, has missed the opportunity to compete in the initial leg of the Triple Crown for three consecutive years. His return comes after a turbulent period in the racing community, particularly following the controversial victory of Medina Spirit at the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

Baffert celebrated his seventh Kentucky Derby win on May 1, 2021, with Medina Spirit, a 3-year-old colt belonging to Zedan Racing Stables. This win, at Churchill Downs, set a new record previously held with another Hall of Fame trainer, Ben Jones. However, soon after that victory, trouble struck; on May 9, it was revealed that Medina Spirit failed a drug test for elevated levels of the steroid betamethasone. Following this revelation, Churchill Downs announced Baffert’s suspension, asserting that any violation would lead to the disqualification of Medina Spirit, declaring Mandalawn as the rightful winner.

In June 2021, Baffert received a two-year suspension from entering horses at Churchill Downs as a result of the drug test failure. Fast forward to February 21, 2022, when Medina Spirit was officially stripped of the Derby title. It was around this time that Baffert found himself embroiled in legal battles, even filing a lawsuit against Churchill Downs in March 2022, claiming he was being unfairly treated compared to other trainers.

In May 2023, a federal judge dismissed Baffert’s lawsuit, upholding the prior two-year ban. Interestingly enough, around this same time, one of Baffert’s horses achieved a noticeable victory at the Preakness Stakes, adding to the complexity of his situation. Churchill Downs emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of horse racing, stating that Baffert’s actions raised concerns.

By July 2023, Baffert’s suspension was extended until 2024 as Churchill Downs reiterated that they could not trust trainers who fail drug tests. It was noted that Baffert seemed to continue promoting false narratives about the situation, leading to further issues.

In January 2024, Baffert expressed a change in approach by announcing the dismissal of appeals related to Medina Spirit’s disqualification. He stated intentions to concentrate on the future and the success of his team. By April 2024, a Kentucky court judge denied an appeal related to another horse seeking entry into the Kentucky Derby.

Ultimately, in July 2024, after acknowledging his role in the prior incident, Baffert’s suspension was lifted. He recognized the disciplinary actions were necessary for the sport’s integrity. Churchill Downs welcomed him back, stating the importance of moving forward collectively within the racing community.

Fast forward to May 2025, and it seems Baffert is back in the race with hopes for his trained horses to compete in the upcoming Kentucky Derby. “It was a tough three years, but I’m ready to focus on what’s ahead,” he remarked in a recent interview.
