Kentucky police recover SUV, AR-15 in manhunt for shooter

Kentucky State Police have seized an SUV and an AR-15 rifle in the search for a suspect who opened fire near Interstate 75, wounding several people and causing a car crash.

The Laurel County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that a small silver SUV registered to suspect Joseph A. Couch, 32, was recovered Saturday evening on a U.S. Forest Service road off Interstate 75 at Exit 49. A rifle case was also recovered inside the vehicle.

On Sunday afternoon, sheriff's deputies recovered the rifle near Interstate 75 and near the SUV that had been recovered the previous night.

These discoveries came during an investigation that was launched after a shooting occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday near Exit 49 on Interstate 75.

Deputy Gilbert Atcharo, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said five people were shot early Sunday morning and that all were in stable condition, but some of the victims suffered “very serious injuries,” including one person who was shot in the face.

Two other people were injured in the vehicle accident, he said.

The search was suspended Saturday as darkness fell, but authorities “contained” the scene overnight, according to the sheriff's office.

The search resumed on Sunday and continues.
