Kentucky Upsets No. 9 Texas A&M
After a tough loss to Alabama, Kentucky made a statement in their next Southeastern Conference matchup. The Wildcats’ quarterback, Kenny Minchey, threw for two touchdown passes, leading Kentucky to a surprising 31-21 victory over No. 9 Texas A&M at Kyle Field on Saturday.
A strong performance in the third quarter under first-year coach Will Stein marked the win, which not only secured Stein’s first road victory in conference play but also gave Kentucky their first win against a ranked team in almost two years. The last time they achieved that feat was on September 28, 2024, when they defeated then-No. 6 Ole Miss 20-17.
Texas A&M faced a familiar challenge with a Kentucky defense managed by Jay Bateman, a former assistant coach for the Aggies. Bateman’s recent experience with Texas A&M appeared to help, as the Wildcats kept their opponents off-balance, limiting Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed to 236 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
“This is what I expect us to do,” Stein expressed after the game. “That’s how I expect us to play. There’s a level of physicality, toughness, competitiveness, and grit that I want to see every Saturday.” It really seems like he has a clear vision for his team’s character.
In the second half, Minchey connected with Kenny Darby for a 42-yard touchdown on the first drive, breaking a tie that had been 7-7. Following that, running back CJ Baxter scored rushing touchdowns on the Wildcats’ next two possessions, extending their lead to 28-7. They later added a 52-yard field goal, making the score 31-14 with under nine minutes left.
Though Texas A&M responded with a drive that culminated in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Reed to Micah Riley late in the game, it wasn’t enough. A Kentucky defensive back, Jordan Castell, intercepted Reed during a crucial moment, effectively sealing the win for the Wildcats.
Texas A&M’s head coach, Mike Elko, acknowledged the struggles. “I did not do a good enough job of coaching this team and preparing this team,” he admitted. “I don’t take any positives from this game. Kentucky came in here and whopped us.” You could sense his frustration; it’s tough when you’re not at your best.
Minchey finished the game with 252 passing yards, while Baxter contributed with 19 carries for 87 yards. Interestingly, Kentucky completely dominated the third quarter, outgaining Texas A&M 196-20. It’s remarkable how one quarter can change the game’s dynamics.
Next week, Texas A&M looks ahead to another challenging matchup against LSU, whereas Kentucky returns home to host South Alabama. It’ll be interesting to see how both teams respond after this week’s game.
