Kentucky takes legal action against Roblox regarding Charlie Kirk's 'assassination simulators'

Kentucky Attorney General Sues Roblox Over Content Safety

Kentucky’s Attorney General, Russell Coleman, has raised concerns about the online gaming platform Roblox, claiming it isn’t doing enough to protect children from harmful content.

On Monday, Coleman initiated a lawsuit, alleging that Roblox has allowed minors to access disturbing “bloody animated” visuals related to an assassination simulation involving Charlie Kirk.

The lawsuit, reported by various media, asserts that Roblox is operating without proper safety measures, exposing children to violent and sexually explicit material, including a simulator for a “Charlie Kirk” assassination.

Roblox, which is projected to have 79 million daily active users by the second quarter of 2024—an increase of around 15 million since 2023—has about 58% of its audience under the age of 16, translating to approximately 46 million children.

According to the complaint, these assassination simulators could be accessed by children as young as five, showcasing graphic depictions of a tragic mass shooting event.

The legal document points out that Roblox could implement measures to ensure age verification, potentially limiting access to harmful content for users under the age of 18.

Kentucky’s argument highlights that child predators can create accounts pretending to be children, raising further concerns about safety.

In defense, a Roblox spokesperson expressed a willingness to discuss the issues directly with the Attorney General. However, they also criticized the lawsuit as being based on outdated information and suggested that some parties involved might be aiming for financial gain.

Roblox maintains that it is committed to user safety, having the industry-leading stance on age communications. The company plans to require facial age estimation for all users by the end of the year. They also claim to actively monitor communication for harmful content and collaborate with law enforcement when necessary.

Roblox further explained that their age verification process, which might include methods like selfie video authentication and parental consent, is designed to enhance safety on the platform.

Despite issues surrounding user safety, Roblox has acknowledged that around 64% of its user base is now over the age of 13.

While Roblox has messaging filters in place, the sheer scale of its user base makes rigorous enforcement challenging. This complicates matters of digital identity, especially in protecting children’s privacy.

In the meantime, various users continue to push creative boundaries, crafting unusual scenarios in the game, which sometimes leads to problematic content. Roblox insists they have protective measures to shield minors from objectionable interactions.
