Kevin Costner Narrates New Holiday Special
The upcoming ABC holiday special features Kevin Costner narrating the story of Mary and Joseph, reminiscent of classic Walt Disney storytelling. This adaptation remains faithful to the Biblical narrative, likely appealing to even the most devoted followers.
Kevin Costner Presents: My First Christmas is scheduled to air on Tuesday night (Dec. 9) at 8 PM Eastern. It tells the Nativity story, starting with the angel’s announcement to Mary and extending to Christ’s birth and subsequent events. Unlike many other adaptations, this one continues beyond the manger scene, illustrating Simeon’s moment with Jesus in the temple. It also implies that the wise men visited Jesus during his early childhood, a view supported by many Bible scholars despite common beliefs.
Director David L. Cunningham expressed that the aim was to approach the story authentically and without cynicism. He desires to steer clear of any tedious elements.
Cunningham described the show as akin to the traditional Walt Disney movie concept. It opens with Costner sipping coffee and reflecting on his own childhood experiences at a Nativity play. The narrative is woven together with reenactments and insights from biblical scholars.
This special was filmed in Morocco, a location that closely mimics the landscape of Israel. Cunningham likened it to Walt Disney inviting viewers to “come experience the story with me.”
He shared that Costner’s authenticity makes him an ideal guide for this journey, highlighting the actor’s genuine character.
The special also includes reenactments of violent scenes, such as King Herod’s order to kill children, and showcases Costner expressing his faith as he narrates the story. He mentions that many, including himself, believe Jesus rose from the dead after his burial, reinforcing the message of hope.
Cunningham emphasized that this special goes beyond merely recounting the Nativity story; it aims to uncover the deeper significance behind it. He believes it’s crucial to understand who Jesus was and why he came, presenting the “upside-down kingdom” he represents.
“When we celebrate Christmas, it’s such a special time for families. I hope this serves as a reminder of why we celebrate and for whom we celebrate,” he added.
