Kevin Costner’s much-anticipated film “Horizon” has transformed into a significant headache, affecting not just its box office performance.
This project, set in the American West, absorbed millions of Costner’s own funds and is now at the center of a complex legal dispute involving New Line Cinema, the Horizon Series (which is linked to Costner’s financing), and Municipal Bank, as reported on May 12th by the Hollywood Reporter.
Municipal Bank has initiated arbitrations against both the Horizon Series and New Line, which has countered with a CrossClaim seeking repayment from the Horizon series as part of its legal defense.
It appears there’s a contract between New Line and the Horizon series stipulating that some of the initial funding needs to be returned. New Line Cinema believes it covers some unpaid payments from its partners; however, Municipal Bank claims they are owed more than what has been acknowledged.
Sources suggest that the relationship between the Horizon Series and New Line has deteriorated to a stalemate, straying from any cooperative agreement.
There’s an increasing number of companies entangled in this conflict regarding the film, which was initially thought to be a promising venture for all involved.
New Line declined to provide comments on the situation, and attempts to reach the City National Bank, Horizon Series, and Costner’s representatives went unanswered.
Costner, perhaps a bit frustrated, noted previously that his personal investment in “Horizon” exceeds $50 million, even leading him to mortgage his land in Santa Barbara to fund the project.
“Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” which Costner directed, starred in, co-wrote, and financed, had a hefty budget of $100 million but only managed to rake in $11 million during its opening weekend.
This film was intended as the first of four installments in a Western series, with follow-ups planned to be released shortly after, but complications have interrupted those plans.
As for “Chapter 2,” its future remains uncertain, although filming for “Chapter 3” commenced last year amidst funding challenges.
In past discussions, Costner expressed his struggles to secure sufficient financing to realize his vision for this film.
Fans have been left disappointed by his decision to step back from the latter part of “Yellowstone” Season 5, citing scheduling conflicts with “Horizon.”
He addressed this by conveying that when he went to shoot “Yellowstone,” he found himself without a script. Costner shared that there was not enough time to juggle both projects effectively.
Despite the complications, Costner maintained that “Yellowstone” remains a top priority for him, emphasizing that he wouldn’t insinuate otherwise.
The last episode of “Yellowstone” aired on December 15th, 2024, concluding five seasons of the series, which has since spawned various spin-offs.
