Imminent Trade for Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant’s potential trade seems just around the corner. Recently, ESPN’s Shams Charania mentioned on “The Pat McAfee Show” that a deal could happen “in the coming days,” with the Rockets, Heat, and Timberwolves currently leading discussions.
Charania noted that while about six to eight teams have reached out to the Suns, most significant talks have revolved around those three franchises over the last couple of days. Initially, the Knicks were thought to be part of the conversation, but reports have since clarified that they are not pursuing Durant.
It was also stated by NBA insider Jake Fisher that there’s an “increasingly stronger belief” that a trade could occur before the NBA draft on June 25. With Durant in the last year of a four-year, $166 million contract, potential trade partners have to think carefully about their next steps.
A major concern for the teams considering Durant is whether they would be willing to extend his contract or if they prefer to have him only for this year. Charania made an interesting comparison to the Raptors’ 2018 trade for Kawhi Leonard, who delivered a championship to Toronto before moving to the Clippers.
While Durant is nearing the end of his career, he’s still an exceptional scorer. Last season, he averaged 26.6 points in 62 games with the Suns, but the team struggled, finishing with a 36-46 record and missing the playoffs.
If Durant ends up in Houston, he could team up with rising talents like Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson. Meanwhile, Minnesota offers a chance to join a competitive lineup that includes superstar Anthony Edwards. It’s a lot to consider, really, and how this plays out will be interesting to watch.
