What’s the situation with Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets?
Interestingly, it seems Durant isn’t exactly hoping to join the Rockets.
He is said to have quite an interest in the Rockets’ current dynamics, yet there are reservations about bringing on the Phoenix Suns star. This insight reportedly comes from Athletics.
The 36-year-old Durant has maintained his health fairly well in recent seasons. While he did have issues related to an Achilles injury in his last game with the Warriors, he doesn’t fit with Houston’s rebuilding phase since most of their core players are under 24 years old.
During this offseason, the Rockets aimed to build on their promising young roster, which had driven them to secure the second seed in the West, before they were eliminated by the Warriors in a tough seven-game playoff series.
As the Rockets consider their next moves, they face a pivotal choice: should they trade some assets for a proven star to propel their championship aspirations? Or is the focus better placed on nurturing the young talent and allowing them to grow?
This dilemma is often seen across the NBA. However, with a wealth of assets at their disposal, Houston might be in a more favorable situation than most teams dealing with this issue.
They have a potential for substantial trade packages while also holding onto a strong roster of current players.
While key players like Amen Thompson are deemed untouchable, young talents such as Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Tali Eason, Jabari Smith, and Reed Shepherd could be leveraged, paired with a stack of draft picks, to acquire a superstar.
The Rockets possess particularly valuable assets including Phoenix’s first-round pick, especially since Phoenix landed the 10th spot in the recent draft lottery and has the rights to the Suns’ first-round pick in 2027.
This offseason could present opportunities, especially with names like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Zion Williamson, and Devin Booker potentially in play, but Durant appears to be the most accessible target for teams due to his age and contract status.
Durant is entering the final year of his deal, with a payout of nearly $55 million expected.
Previously, the Rockets had shown interest in Booker, who is 28 years old, but with younger and cheaper options available, the speculation now seems to point towards Antetokounmpo as a favored target for Houston this offseason.
